This was at least my fourth time reading this book. This book has always been a source of inspiration. As the protagonist learns what art is, what it means to speak up, who she is and wants to be, and what her role was in a scarring situation the author includes tidbits of wisdom a reader can pick up. In this reading I found the piece of wisdom, no tree is perfect, flaws are what make something interesting powerful in many realms of my life. The author’s choice to fragment chapters is a wonderfu ...more

i don't really know what to say about this - i sped through it. it was a little frustrating because the whole story was a bit obvious to me and little forced, but i enjoyed the structure and i enjoyed melinda.

it is a very powerful story, i think, that perhaps i read too quickly to fully grasp. however, the fact that i kept reading and wanting to read means a lot, especially right now.

one of my favorite parts was the "comment on censorship" at the end. the other favorite part was david's commen

Melinda Sordino starts her freshman year in high school as an outcast. She was just like any other kid in eighth grade, she was popular and had many friends, but there was a problem over the summer. While attending a party with some friends, Melinda ended up having to call the police. Now her friends won’t talk to her and most of the kids in her school know she’s the one who made the call so they shun her as well. The story takes place throughout Melinda’s school year as we see how her silence d ...more

I've read this book several times after first picking it up at the library when I was 15. I like it as much now as I did then, and I still find it as moving. You go through the book following Melinda as she starts a new year at school, something traumatic has happened to her but that's not even referred to until half way through the book, and not revealed until the end. All you really know is that all of the students in her school think she's really weird, and some of them seem to hate her. It's ...more

Why are there so many books I've read and loved that I didn't review on here?! Alas.
I just reread this one via audiobook and I still found Melinda's story to be heartbreaking and hard but I love her small triumphs, the small ways that she slowly, gradually starts to reclaim and rebuild herself.
I quite liked the reread via audiobook :)
