It is so hard writing a review about this book, I waited so long for it to finally be available at my library, read it so fast but was very disappointed. Giving the book a stretched 3.4 stars, I think is to much but can not get myself to lower it. I see now why people say the show is better, and the problems they found regarding this book.

I've read over some reviews & I completely understand how/why people are saying Hannah seemed whiny or that her suicide was "unjustified", but you must remember, she was only in high school. To her, high school was the world and her only experiences came from the world of high school.
Don't you remember being in high school? Everything that now, looking back, probably seems dumb, pointless, or irrational was once the most important OKAY, so.. where do I begin? I really, truly enjoyed this book. To her, high school was the world and her only experiences came from the world of high school.
Don't you remember being in high school? Everything that now, looking back, probably seems dumb, pointless, or irrational was once the most important thing to you! In high school, most of us had no real-world experiences to base life off of, just like Hannah. She felt as though she had no real friends, the boys she trusted seemingly always turned against her, no one noticed her & she felt left out, probably thinking that's how her life would always be. Rumors ultimately ruined her reputation and these weren't just rumors from some random people, the main rumor she talks about that started the "snowball effect" came from one of the only people she confided in when she first moved into town.

Overall, the book was well-written and moved at a steady pace. Sometimes, I felt like Clay was a huge nerd, from the way his thoughts were conveyed through the book, he seemed like a guy too shy to express his feelings and too shy to speak to girls. He almost seemed.. too innocent.. too naive..? I'm not sure of the best word to express how I felt about Clay, but overall, I guess his intentions were good.
At times, I felt like bursting out in tears, because I could feel the emotions Hannah was going through, especially as the tapes progressed. I feel like the closer I got to the end of the book, the realization and decision that she was actually going to commit suicide sank in more & more. At the beginning of the book, Hannah jokes around a good bit & it almost sounds as though she's set the whole thing up as payback, but as the book progresses, her jokes dwindle down, the tone becomes more somber and the stories get darker.
The overall story was intriguing & I thought the way Asher came up with the idea of the book was really cool (he went through a museum tour with an audio tour guide & thought the invisible voice explaining to him what he was looking at was creepy)! I actually hoped and believed during Clay's story that Hannah really was just pulling a big shitty prank and that's why Tony was driving him around, to meet up with Hannah where she would jump out from somewhere and confess her love for Clay.... hopeful wishing, huh....
I would highly recommend this book to everyone! It's insightful and inspiring. As my mom said after reading it, "you really should be nice to everyone, because you just never know what they could be going through". ...more

Have you ever wondered how people can affect someone's life whether it be good or bad? Jay Asher tells the story about a girl named Hannah who is severely affected in many different ways which leads to unfortunate events.

I recently reread the book because I just finished the Netflix Original. I HIGHLY recomend this book to any teenager looking for a fast-paced novel that you'll finish in a day. ...more
