4.5 stars. After reading many of the mixed reviews of this book I was hesitant to read it. It has sat on my shelf since 2011. I finally picked it up and boy am I glad I did. This book grabbed me, pulled at my heartstrings and wouldn't let go. It is a WWII story that is quite different from those I've read before.

I didn't really take in, when I picked this book up, that I was once again going to be reading a novel set right before America enters WWII, just as in A Separate Peace. It's a fairly fascinating time to look at. The themes of loneliness and access to information were interesting. I found Frankie's story the most interesting - her reporting of the Blitz, but especially the train ride. I was going to throw out two stars to this major snooze-a-thon, until the author's note mentioned made up historical facts that were incredibly integral to the plot. I don't agree with stretching history this way, sorry to be a stickler Ms. Blake!

It's a lovely story on life at times of war for 3 different women whose lives intersected in a small town. Iris James came to Franklin as the new Postmaster. Emma Fitch came as a new bride of the town doctor. Frankie Bard met Dr Fitch in London, witnessed directly the horrible impact of war, and came to Franklin with what she thought was her duty.
