The first half is a glorious burst of cinematic meta madness, what with the Faustian swindles, fleeing naked theater attendees, and severed heads. The second half is somehow wearisome, despite featuring a witch smashing an apartment block and a midnight satanic ball. I never became emotionally attached to any of the characters, but Bulgakov can turn an epic scene. 12 august 2015 -- This new edition, though! Look at that cover design, AND Pevear & Volokhonsky, FTW!

Abandoned. This starts off with a discussion between two fellows as to whether Jesus existed. A person who I suspect the author means for us to understand as the devil puts in an appearance. Chapter Two is titled "Pontius Pilate" but appears to be some sort of fantasy chapter, a genre which I can see no point in reading. I flipped through to other places in the book and there seems to be nothing here of interest to me.
