This was really really good, I can't quite give it a 4 though...eehhh...I think. I don't know, I need to think about it. Definitely a 3.5 at least. How this world becomes what it is makes sense, but I just can't see this actually happening, so it doesn't put as much fear in me as 1984. I also don't love the very last chapter, it kind of takes away my connection to the main character and makes the whole book seem technical and far away. Which may have been the point, but I didn't love it.

This is one of my favourite books. I listed it as American, but it's Canadian (however I felt that through the reading she was talking about America). It's a horrifying story of a woman forced to endure monthly rape to help an upclass infertile family have a child. The story is brilliantly crafted, through a series of memories of Offred we learn that she was employed and independent before the war changed everything.
