Great characters! he certainly wrote characters that you love to hate! Also felt much pain and sorrow for too....I felt it dragged just a bit towards the end, and I also got increasingly frustrated with Sayuri and her pining for the Chairmain at the expense of Nobu. I know it worked out for her in the end, and I did like how it ended, but up to the point where she leaves her life as a Geisha to be the Chairman's full-time mistress, I wanted to knock her over the head for constantly overlooking w

There are very few "popular book-club" type books that I feel the hype is justified - Water for Elephants and The Red Tent are now joined by Memoirs of a Geisha. Utterly engrossing. The only reason it didn't get five stars was the "long plot" - I didn't really need a happy ending to be satisfied and it felt tacked on.

I did like it. The writing is often beautiful and the plot kept me interested. But it is also a book that made me uncomfortable.
