Wish I could give 3.5 stars!
I was never completely lost in this novel as I read it, in part because Eugenides is a little sloppy on details (a character has spent a certain amount of money on one page and a different amount on another without making additional purchases; a character talks on the phone for "a few minutes" and more than an hour of time disappears; etc.) and in part because of the jumping perspective. Most of the book is from Madeleine's point of view, with many sections from Mitch ...more

Hmm - maybe 3.5 stars. Every review should start with - if you did not major in English Lit in college or if you did not go to college - then this book is not for you. I was not an English Lit major.
I slogged through the first 65 pages with it's billion literary and philosophical references. But after 60ish pages, the frequency of the references decreased and I started to enjoy the book. The story of literature student Madeleine Hanna, graduating from Brown in 1982, and the two young men in her life, Mitchell who loves her and Leonard whom she loves.
I expected to enjoy this a lot more than I did, since Jeffrey Eugenides and these characters are just my age. There was a certain amount of nostalgia value but the first three-quarters of the book were hard going for me because I found Madeleine such a tiresome, self-obsessed character. Eugenides writes beautifully, but something about this book was a little lacking. It's a good book but not a great book. I think perhaps the subject was just too mundane - Eugenides prior two (amazing) books were about unusual things. In comparison, a not-even-heated love triangle is a bit limp.
Enjoyable, but not a must-read.
