This is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings. I actually read LOTR first when I was 9 years old (back when dinosaurs walked the earth...) and it was rough going, so I highly recommend reading The Hobbit first. I enjoyed the story and liked all the adventures Bilbo had. I wshed Tolkein went more into the personalities of all the dwarves. A lot of them were just names. I also thought Gandalf acted rather strangely and not much like a wizard.
We're talking The Hobbit here. Bilbo Baggins what else can I say. Would there have been a Lord of the Rings trilogy without The Hobbit? Who writes better fantasy than J. R. R. Tolkiens? Read it you'll like it. Hobbits, Riders, Dragons- everything needed for good story telling.

If I were more of a fantasy fan, I'm sure I would have given this at least 4 stars, maybe 5.
