I loved this book not only for its ideas of what a future society might be like, but also, of course for the heavy 1980's NOSTALGIA FACTOR! As a kid of the 80s I ate this book up like candy- everything from books, to film to Ataru games are referenced with reverence in this book. Basically, in a a fuure America, everyone essentially LIVES online, even attending virtual reality school. The world itself is a cesspool of crime and overpopulation and pollution. The man who has built the Net up to wh

I can't believe it took me so long to read this, being a person who once used a Commodore 64 and an Atari. Granted, I was more of a literature nerd than a video game one and let st of the Japanese references went over my head. Still.
I read this for a book club, which I attended having read 70% of the book. And with my four month old. But it was a wonderful, funny new group, mostly full of people who hadn't really liked the book. They disliked the lack of character development and that the chara ...more

I really liked this one mostly because I loved the 80's, and I'm a total gamer. Fun book!

Title: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (11/4/18)
Why I picked this book up: Recommended by a few people, it was in my Audible library.
What I thought about it: I definitely liked it better than Ascend Online or the movie that made from it. As an audio book, the list of player and scores updated throughout became repetitive.
Overall impression: 4/5.00

i guess this is YA. It's good fun. I even managed to enjoy it despite never having played a computer game. It's a bit weird for an older person like me because it's a world where Second Life has taken over the net rather than dying quietly in a corner, like it has in real life. I really hated through the eighties living through them, so i wasn't keen on the worship of eighties 'culture' - encourage kids to try out good stuff not rubbish!

Slow going at the start of the book, but about a quarter of the way through the book I didn't want to put it down. It's a little scary to think about how close our society might be to this scenario. I thoroughly enjoyed the 80s references; as a child of that decade it brought back memories and tested my recollection of that time. Well developed characters and an engaging storyline.
