Even though so many readers I respect kept hounding me to read this book, I put it off for years because (I know, you guys, I'm ready for the dropped jaws) I didn't love Grapes of Wrath. I mean, I was an English major, so I certainly appreciate it, and the writing is obviously fantastic, but I didn't really enjoy reading it. I'm probably one of the very few who didn't particularly care for East of Eden. The characters felt very flat to me for the most part. No one is all good or all bad. Also the dialog didn't ring true. Further, I didn't agree with much of the author's philosophy. If an author is trying to convince me of a certain point of view, I'd much rather s/he have his characters do the job. But come down to it, Steinbeck can write, which pulls this up beyond the 2 stars I might otherwise have given it.
