Just finished my second reading, and was just as moved by it as I was on first reading about 20 years ago.
Barnes is a masterful writer and has been for decades. I've found his more recent work, though, a bit less fresh and a bit too masterful. It's like perhaps he can do this literary novel thing in his sleep, so he sort of does.
But A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters is fresh. It's messy, full of threads that twist back on themselves, divide and duplicate. It's imperfect and a little bit ...more
