I loved this book! Herbie Bookbinder is a wonderful hero and even the slightly heavy-handed moralizing at the end of the book failed to ruin the rollicking story of Herbie's eleven-year-old summer. The book is set in 1928, and Herbie is sent from the Bronx to summer camp to experience the outdoors with other city children. The coming of age story is charming, hopeful, but also captures both the terror and the magic of childhood.
