What a lovely little book! It consists of a series of vignettes, showing us the forging of a lifelong relationship between a grandmother and granddaughter. The little girl's mother has just died, so the household consists of these two and "Papa" who never says anything but who we occasionally hear about.

The little girl is Sophia, and she seems very typical. We never learn the name of the grandmother, who I think is not particularly typical. They make up stories about the world around them. Usual

A nearly perfect book. It's quite hard to review this short book with its chapter-long vignettes of rambling about between a grandmother and her young (maybe six years old?) granddaughter. The perspective of the book shifts fluidly between the grandmother and the granddaughter as they meander about building magical cities, fishing in ponds, going to the beach, and watching father do his unspecified work. In the end, however, I just felt the love this grandmother has for ...more

Reading this book was such an emotional experience--it reminded me so very much of my own very gruff but very loving grandmother. My complete review of this character study is at Col Reads: http://colreads.blogspot.com/2010/06/... ...more

5.0/5.0 - The best thing about doing reading challenges is when they push me outside of my reading comfort zone, and I discover treasures like this book. The writing was beautiful, it had simple black and white illustrations, and it would be a great book club choice.
