Jack London drew on his experiences in the Klondike gold rush when writing The Call of the Wild. He headed north to Canada in 1987 to search for gold, and published this book in 1903. The Call of the Wild is a book about the fight for survival and the transformation of a St Bernard/shepherd mix dog named Buck. The dog was a pet in California before he was stolen and shipped north. This story begins in 1897 during the gold rush in the Klondike region of the Yukon. The demand for strong sled dogs was greater than the available supply, so numerous dogs were kidnapped from distant lands and brought to Alaska to fill the need. Buck, the narrator of this wonderfully-told story, is one of these kidnapped dogs. London wrote a powerful story of the men (some good, some bad) who came to the Klondike to make their fortunes, of the harsh landscape and conditions the men encountered,

I remember reading a Jack London short story about a man falling through the ice in the arctic and trying to light a fire afterwards, with his frozen hands, with only a limited amount of time before he was sure to die of hypothermia. This story stuck with me for years and years.
