Uprooted is a lush and vibrant novel, rich with imagery. I've learned a lesson here about first impressions because somewhere during the first chapter I went, well, maybe this isn't for me . . . then I read on and on and soon I was captured not only by the protagonist, who is not your average heroine, but by the unfolding story. Our protagonist, Agnieszka is awkward, clumsy and not a beauty. But she is determined, stubborn and she has a gift, a gift of magic, new, untried and untamed. Sarkan ...more

An engrossing fantasy that I swallowed in several gulps. The beginning is especially wonderful but by the 70% mark or so the story feels like a snowball wildly careening down a hill, getting bigger as it goes. It's massive, it's awesome, but there's no way to take a breather. The time spent at the castle could have been a great way to add psychological space.
I'm surprised my library shelved this as adult fiction - it has a definite young adult vibe, even with the romantic stuff. (view spoiler) ...more

I feel like I'm the only one in this galaxy that couldn't bring myself to like the most awesomest amazingest omg-oh-so-fantastically fanticest book ever: Uprooted. I wish I had a strength to go on and finish the book BUT

Nothing happened, and I couldn't care less about any of the characters. I mean, I guess I just took a roundtrip ticket to Yawnfest because, damn, my jaw hurts.
Life is short, people. Just read the book that you feel like it's worth it. ...more

I loved this book. From reading other reviews it's a hit or miss story. Knowing absolutely nothing about Polish or Russian folklore I was able to follow along quite well. Agniezka is a girl from the valley who lives near the wood. The wood is a place where only bad things come out of it, and if one does goes in they never come out. But if they do they are turned mad which can pass onto the others like an infectious disease.
Every 10 years a girl is chosen from the valley to live with the dragon. ...more
