i really fucked myself over by waiting YEARS to read this, finishing all of TJR's other works prior, and overhyping this one to the extreme. there's no way it could have lived up to my expectations.
why did i do this to myself? good question. i adored both malibu rising and daisy jones & the six, but since then, my fondness for TJR's writing has dwindled with each additional book of hers i read.
that said: much of this book's praise is deserved. it's well-crafted, evocative, dramatically juicy, an ...more

A really enjoyable read about the life of a (fictious) Marilyn Monroe-esque starlet and what it took for her to make it as an actress. It was interesting to read her backstory, but ultimately - all the husbands and her life felt a little 1-dimensional - except for her reading about her 1 true love. It was heartbreaking in the end.

Okay...
I loved this book I really did. The story was just so captivating and there were so many points where I had to know what happened. Evelyn was such a lovable character but also deeply flawed and at times you find yourself disappointed in her, but know she is capable of being better. Monique was not my favorite character but I found that part to be easy to let slide. The ending SLAYED ME. I was so shocked, it was so unpredictable which was so refreshing for me. The ending really changed my ...more

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I read this because of it’s popularity, but the synopsis didn’t seem all that exciting to me. As I started reading though, I became sucked in to the story and loved every bit if it. I enjoyed the characters, I enjoyed the writing, I enjoyed the storyline, I enjoyed how unpredictable it was, I enjoyed how it read as if Evelyn Hugo was a real person… I just overall really enjoyed it!

Amazing read!! I absolutely adored this book. It kept my interest the entire way and the author had a great way of telling Evelyn’s story and also making you feel sympathy for her. Evelyn may have hurt people along the way, but you still had cared for her like you would a friend. I adored that a lot of this book took place back in the day, especially the 40’s and 50’s. The authors writing style and descriptive details really made you feel like you’re actually there.

I loved this book. I loved hearing Evelyn's story over the years. Characters were extremely likable and believable.
