The Goodreads description will give you enough hint of what this novel entails. It is written in the first person of Tristan Sadler. The sections alternate between months in 1916, first in training and then at the Front and then in the fall of 1919 when Tristan goes to Norwich to deliver letters entrusted to him by his friend Will Bancroft.

In 1919, Tristan Sadler sets out from London to Norwich to return a packet of letters to Marian Bancroft, who wrote them to her brother Will who didn't make it home from the war. When Tristan and Marian meet, there's tension on both sides, which only increases as the day goes on and we hear about Tristan's relationship with Will.

I think I was expecting a sweet but tragic WWI gay love story, and this book is definitely not that. (view spoiler) ...more
