What Members Thought

I really enjoyed this book which was set in rural New Mexico just after WWII. I learned more about the Catholic religion than I expected to in this coming-of-age story. The author wonderfully captured the back-and-forth bantering that goes on between a group of pre-teen boys. Some scenes were comic, but some were tragic. It had a bit of everything including some magic realism.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book.

Really beautiful story. I picked it up because I was hoping to get this for summer reading for my students but unfortunately I do not work with some of the hardest working people right now. This book is exactly right for summer reading. It's engaging, beautiful, full of literary meat to be analyzed, and a strong story of cultural diversity that many of my New England kids could use.
