This was a quick, not-entirely-breezy read that starts with a bang and ends...in a way that pleasantly surprised me for not trying too hard to end on a too-pat note. There are a few plot points that struck me as too coincidental, more than a few lines that clunked, but for the most part I liked the complexity of the fraught relationships between well-meaning people who struggle to communicate. This book tackles a difficult set of interactions intersecting class, race, sex, and cultural performance and doesn't shy away from complicated layers. The short version of the story--Black babysitter for rich white family is accosted by security guard at an upscale grocery store when out with child--is actually just the background for the book. This was a good book. It discusses the good intentions of white people trying to be the black 'saviour'. But sometimes, these well meaning intentions tend to backfire and cause more harm than good. Are they done to make white people feel better about themselves, look good to others, or be more woke? Are they really helping? Read and decide for yourself.
