It was a pleasure to re-read old favorites, like 起狮,行礼 (Rising Lion — The Lion Bows) and The House of Aunts, and to discover some new favorites as well, like The Four Generations of Chang E and Prudence and the Dragon. Zen Cho's mix of humor and emotions gets me every time.

Oh, Zen Cho. Such gorgeous writing. And the infusion of Malaysian flavours into her stories which have elevated them further. I thought the Sorcerer Royal was charmingly quaint but ultimately just an okay read, but Black Water Sister and now Spirits Abroad have felt like coming home. I loved the use of Manglish; recognised familiar threads in each story, tropes subverted and refashioned into something I could relate to - fantasy but hauntingly familiar, not just the whitewashed fairylands that w
