louise erdrich is such a gift to the literary world!
in this novel, she is focusing on time in the mid-1950s, when the US government intended to "free" Native Americans from federal supervision. of course, as witnessed again and again in history, the government's true intention was the abrogation of treaties, termination of tribal rights, and - ultimately - total abandonment of native americans already impoverished by centuries of g ...more

Yet another wonderful book by Louise Erdrich! I only more or less discovered her last year when I happened to pick up The Bingo Palace at an independent bookstore in North Dakota, completely fall in love, and now this is her sixth book I've read! I say "more or less discovered" because I had read The Round House some years back and found it very good but also too emotionally harrowing at the time, and I was a bit daunted when it came to picking up another one of her books.

Inspired by the life of the author’s grandfather who challenged the termination of the Turtle Mountain tribe in the 1950’s. This is a period of US/First People’s history that I have only recently become aware of. Erdrich tells us of the struggles of the community and fills in the story of people—their talents, weaknesses and strengths. It is an emotional and touching story but I felt that the author wove in at least one more thread than necessary.

I don't always like authors as narrators, but Erdich does a great job with this audiobook. She managed to differentiate the characters and give them authentic voices.
Erdich is one of those prolific American writers that I feel like I should have read but somehow had not. I'm pretty sure I have one of her books on my shelves waiting to be picked up, but just never quite got to anything of hers. I'm so glad to have finally read one of her novels.
