This started off quite spooky, but the tone shifted a bit. It’s an interesting look at some of the traditions that contribute to modern day Halloween and an ode to friendship between boys - that description of Pipkin as the best of boys was a bit much for me, to be honest. But it’s a great listen around Halloween and some of the passages are quite beautiful.
If you were a scout leader and you had a several day camping trip with a group of, say, 10-12 year old boys, you might read this book aloud to them in dramatic fashion. This might work better if you were doing this in the 1950's-70's, because more modern kids are probably the type to either not connect with the characters well enough to insert themselves in the story, or would find this schlocky because of the sophisticated nature of most of the entertainment currently peddled to them. I started this audiobook around Halloween with my second grader, and it made for a nice (and somewhat educational) diversion in the car, though it was definitely over his head. Bradbury's writing as always is top-notch, and the story about a group of boys traveling across the centuries through past Halloweens to rescue a friend is a fun one--creepy without being truly scary, though it's possibly too much for the younger set.
