What Members Thought

A novel about a woman who goes to fight in the Civil War, in her husband's place. Why she does that, how much of the story is real, and even the meaning of the title remains a mystery that might be clearer after a second reading. There are some books that just don't make sense to me when I read them the first time (although I rarely reread a book), and this is one of them.

I think the only reason I had this book on my tbr was because I found it on a list for 'girl as boy' as in a girl disguised herself as a boy. It's a favourite trope of mine. While I liked the setting and the author also has interesting prose, I didn't particularly enjoy the novel.

We all loved the poetic writing. But the plot did meander quite a bit, and we trusted the narrator less and less, which was part of the point. Interesting, but didn't quite work.

Was a 5 * read but I didn't care for the ending so knocked it down to a 4 * rating.
