An enchanting April in Italy, a castle, 4 women. Tranquillity is the goal.
It is an enchanting book. The characters are very lifelike and well rounded. The language, style and pace are excellent.
While this might at first sight be a book about nothing (or very small things), behind all the small things and conversations, we see the world of the protagonists unfold itself.

Mrs Wilkin saw an advertisement in the newspaper for a small medieval Italian castle for rent during the month of April for "those who appreciate wisteria and sunshine." The castle overlooked the Mediterranean Sea and was noted for its fabulous gardens. Four women, who previously did not know each other, each needed a holiday for various reasons. Their time at the castle helped them relax, and eventually brought out some of the warm, loving sides of their personalities that they had kept hidden.

I loved the opening of this book. Four women, strangers, team up to rent a castle in Italy for a month. The leave behind dreary London and demanding husbands. Unfortunately it didn't do much with this great set up. I kept getting distracted and losing interest in the story. ...more
