What Members Thought

This book was picked for a book club read. The narrator for the audiobook did an excellent job with the story.
The author deftly handles complicated issues of code-switching, identity, race, racism, policing, and teen coming-of-age moments. These topics are central to the book, but don't interfere with telling a good story, full of real, imperfect, complicated characters. The subject is heavy, the book made me depressed and sad for our world.
This highly reviewed book lived up to the hype. Read it ...more

What a fantastic book! I listened to this in audio format, and Bahni Turpin did an outstanding job!
This debut book by Angie Thomas has heart, and energy and realism -- that left this reader sad for the current complex state of race relations in the US, but hopeful for the future.
