Very, very good. World-building is excellent, the characters are intriguing, and the plot is well-paced. It’s a page-turner that I couldn’t put down. As the pages dwindled, I got concerned. There was not enough text left to wrap Book 1 up. And, yep, this is a true cliffhanger. The book ends in the middle of some important action. I guess it’s better to break-off there than have an 800 page doorstop though!

Do you want epic fantasy inspired by aztec culture? If so this is your book. I love the way the author shows the world instead of explain the world. The main characters were well rounded and interesting. I hope future books have more xiala and naranpa. They have had difficult journeys and deserve more. I would like kore of the giant beasts. The water striders were interesting. The giant crows a bit terrifying. All in all an excellent read.
