“Creation never ceased on the sixth evening, it occurs to the young man. Creation unfolds around us, despite us and through us at the speed of days and nights. And we call it love.”

David Mitchell can really make words sing. And get into his characters' heads. And tell a blindingly good story (or several stories enmeshed into one).

The first section was tremendously annoying: Jacob's viewpoint of the Japanese made them farcical caricatures (the yellow Other with their cringingly pidgin speech)
