Murderbot is a Security Unit assigned to protect a small scientific group surveying a planet. Murderbot has hacked its governor unit so it is independent. Anomalies start happening that put the crew in danger and despite its desire to mainly watch soap operas Murderbot ends up caring about the team it is protecting. This book was fun, lots of dry humor, while keeping you on the edge of your seat. I'll definitely be continuing this series.

This story all takes place from the point of view of a bot, part human, part mechanical. It is controlled by programming. Its job is security for planetary exploration teams. It has hacked into its control program and makes some unusual choices in protecting its humans. The story is fast-paced and leaves much of the world-building to come, hopefully, in the following series.

I loved this book. It's short and I'm sure I'm going to read the rest of these pretty quickly. The main character (the Murderbot from the series title) has a wonderful voice--a robot with anxiety who isn't sure if it feels like doing its work, but mostly does it. Absolutely wonderful. Anyone who likes science fiction at all should read this.
