Helen Thorpe spends time during the 2015-16 school year in a Denver classroom for newcomers. These are high-school-age teens arriving in the US with little or no English language. Most are refugees. They come from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America. Some only speak one language, others speak and read and write four or five.
