While I could not relate to Ernaux's tales about her childhood and plentiful references to French politics and culture, I resonated with The Years's universal themes, from its concerns about our relationship to the past to the anxieties that come with progress; it was easy to do so because I could sense the honesty and humility in Ernaux's ambition to "[retrieve] the memory fo collective memory in an individual memory", to "capture the lived dimension of History".
