What Members Thought
I was definitely not always thinking I’d give this a 5 star rating, until the final page, when she basically makes clear that everything I’d found odd or uncomfortable about in the reading experience was fully intentional. Will be reading this over again I think.
While I could not relate to Ernaux's tales about her childhood and plentiful references to French politics and culture, I resonated with The Years's universal themes, from its concerns about our relationship to the past to the anxieties that come with progress; it was easy to do so because I could sense the honesty and humility in Ernaux's ambition to "[retrieve] the memory fo collective memory in an individual memory", to "capture the lived dimension of History".
