"Love Medicine" is a multigenerational novel about two interrelated families living on a North Dakota reservation from the 1930s to the 1980s. It's written as a series of 18 interlocked stories that often tell about the same situation from a second character's point of view. Native American myths and tricksters color the stories. I found this one more confusing than Tracks, but still an amazing book, worthy of 5 stars. The range of the characters and the use of language are just amazing.

Above all else that I can discern, this is a book about heartbreak. Heartbreak of all kinds; loss of all kinds; grief arising from both pain within individual relationships, and pain of a collective people.

Aptly, Love Medicine spans 50 years, and is divided into chapters that interweave, but which can stand alone as individual stories.
