A beautiful novel that tells the story of Jack Gorse who is under threat of eviction from his New York apartment with all the losses that involves, especially the loss of his routine.
I read an American edition. I think there is a double meaning in the title which would be lost if it was changed to British spelling, because the way the word is used in the narrative, we would spell it "understorey". But that would lose the sense of a layer under the story. ...more
