A harsh look at a scary time in South Korea and the lasting effects. I liked the view from various characters and times. I found the use of the second person distracting at first, but adjusted. It wasn't used in every section, but I noticed when it was used. Glad I read the translator's note in the beginning, added perspective on the translation.

The book is based on a historical event known as the Gwangju Uprising. The Gwangju Uprising occurred in the city of Gwangju, South Korea, from May 18 to 27, 1980. (I was an adult at the time but I don't remember hearing anything about it.) Human Acts focusses on one young (13? 14?) teenaged boy who was killed during the uprising.
