As near perfect as a book can get: a sharp, spunky heroine, well built futuristic reality, suspenseful action, engaging supporting characters, and (best of all from a YA novel) well-written prose. The author does not talk down to her younger readers, nor is it unnecessarily complicated. I have a couple of problems with this book. The first is the premise. While we have some historical precedents of fighting to the death as entertainment, I can't think of any that involved children or that forced the victims' families and friends to watch. I don't see how this would help suppress rebellion in the repressed populations. I also think that it is difficult to believe that a 16 year-old raised in the environment depicted would seem so politically clueless.

I loved it. I loved the Dystopian "after the apocalypse" version of the US with all its brutality. Can't wait to finish the trilogy later this month

Katniss Everdeen lives in a post-apocalyptic North America called Panem which is ruled by a capitol with 12 districts. Every year 2 tributes from each district are sent to the hunger games in a fight to the death. Katniss volunteers to take her sister Prim's place in the Hunger Games and is sent with Peeta Mellark, the bakers son. Suzanne Collins did such an amazing job in creating this dystopian society. There are so many parallels to our own society that reading the book really makes you look a some things differently.
