This book grabbed me by the throat and demanded that I read it over two days. I dreamed about it during the night in between. I woke up in the middle of the next night still thinking about it. The story isn't new: a dystopian society where, to entertain the masses, children are pitted in a fight to the death reality show. But the details of the story still felt compelling -- the training details, the attention to costuming, the thoughts of a contestant who grew up watching the shows.

I have a couple of problems with this book. The first is the premise. While we have some historical precedents of fighting to the death as entertainment, I can't think of any that involved children or that forced the victims' families and friends to watch. I don't see how this would help suppress rebellion in the repressed populations. I also think that it is difficult to believe that a 16 year-old raised in the environment depicted would seem so politically clueless.

Katniss Everdeen lives in a post-apocalyptic North America called Panem which is ruled by a capitol with 12 districts. Katniss volunteers to take her sister Prim's place in the Hunger Games and is sent with Peeta Mellark, the bakers son. The book does a good job of setting up the land and once the games got started I couldn't put the book down. I'm looking forward to reading the next two books in the s ...more

Suzanne Collins did such an amazing job in creating this dystopian society. There are so many parallels to our own society that reading the book really makes you look a some things differently.

I appreciated the relationships that built in this first book and that continue throughout the series. I would (and have many times) whole heartedly recommend this book.
