You are going to die.
That's the first thing Marcus Zusak, with Death as his narrator, tells us in this beautiful, devastating story. Inevitably, any story of Nazi Germany is going to be dark. Heart-breaking, magical. The story of a young, illiterate girl cut loose from her moorings-she watches her little brother die as her mother takes her to be placed in a foster family on the eve of WWII in Germany. The narrator is Death. With a little humor, some compassion and puzzlement, he gathers up the souls from war-torn Europe and puts together Liesel's story of the people and books of her life from her book, The Book Thief.

Really good read, even though it's super long. Drags a bit in the middle. Interesting take on the time during world war 2 with the narrator as Death and the main character a German girl (who is not Jewish). ...more

What a wonderful read! It was very well written and I loved the unique perspective. I never thought I would find so much humor in a book about Germany during WWII and there was a great balance between the devastation of the period and hope for the future.
