I'm usually not a big fan of YA lit, though I love reading YA book reviews and also indiscriminately add them to my TBR. Speak surprised me. I actually connected with this book.

Reread. I'm older now, and this book is just as intensely moving as it was the first time I read it. I want to first talk about why I think this book is wonderful, and then I'll talk about the recent attempts to silence this book. I know I can't do justice to this book and to how I feel about it, but I'm going to clumsily try. Warning: this review presumes that you know the reason why Melinda does not speak.

Compelling and unforgettable. An essential literary art that needs be read by hundreds and thousands of transitioning students from middle- to high school. Melinda, the deprived heroine of the story, will help you find your voice as she did herself.
