Christopher Plummer does a fantastic job bringing these classic stories to life. I'd quite forgotten just how much fun these stories are. I originally thought I'd listen to them with my five-year-old, but having previewed them, I don't think he'll enjoy them just yet. But once I started down the rabbit hole, I ended up listening to both Wonderland and Looking Glass over the course of a week's commuting. I listened to the audio book version that Jim Dale narrated, and boy was it wonderful! I think he adds so much life to the tale. I can't believe I haven't read this before. I know it's marketed as a children's book, but there are so many clever quips and the sly turn of the phrase that I think might go over young children's heads. But I imagine they would be enthralled with the sheer wackiness of the story itself.

It's hard to be objective about a book when it is colored by a traumatic experience. When Disney's Alice came out I had to take my four-year old sister to see it. When Alice fell down the rabbit hole, Jan started screaming, which embarressed me to death. I swore no more Alice for me. I realize this has nothing to do with the book, but I can be as irrational as the next person.

Adventures in Wonderland was kind of cute. It is a classic, weird yes, but quite enjoyable. Through the Looking Glass though was just weird! I did not enjoy it at all. I am glad I finally read it because it is a classic. But I really don't think I will be reading it again.
