This book is so vividly real and cut me right to the heart. My most vicious friends were a little older than the nine-year-olds here--I had demons for friends in high school, not elementary. Or maybe I was a demon at nine, so don't remember it as so dangerous. Still, the descriptions, told in flashback from the perspective of middle age, of the way that kids can make other kids feel, were so spot on I almost felt myself back in that era of people drawing and passing around cartoons about me.

A painter returns to the city of her youth for a retrospective show of her art. She comes to an understanding of her younger self. Beautifully written. Her first chapters dealing with aging definitely brought some chuckles of recognition from me.
