One member of the book group I am in that was discussing this book said it was best to read it as though you were watching a stand up comic. With that in mind, I read it aloud to myself and pictured myself in the audience of a show where the comic on stage joked about race as part of the act. This helped me laugh at myself and gave me permission to enjoy the humor of the “inside jokes” throughout. This book just wasn't for me. I admire the writing and the willingness to talk about issues, but I found the book dragged quite a bit. I've seen the book compared to Vonnegut, but it didn't work for me. Maybe I'm just too depressed about the current world to appreciate biting satire.

This book may have been too in your face for me. I thought the story important to read but was completely turned off by the language peppered throughout the text. Not only was the 'n' word used obscenely, but there was an abundance of R rated language throughout making the story hard to tease out, for this reader.

loud fast funny and even clever than it thinks it is, the nonstop talking joke-cracking loud-laughing confidence man - seriously, good. Kind of like History of Seven Killings: fast, funny, loud, black, American, hilarious, teaches you stuff you never knew (the educational aspect is vastly reduced here - it's mainly, what it's like to live in america); but there is so much good sarcasm. I just fear i missed a lot because i'm white and foreign which it would've been good to learn
