I just flat out loved this book. At first I didn't especially like Kitty. Maugham draws her so well. I am always amazed when an author of one gender can write such a fully drawn character of the other. Originally published in 1925, I was also surprised at the strong feminist feelings that emerged, for Kitty was most certainly not a feminist. As I have said over and over, good prose is essential to my enjoyment. His is very much what I like to read.
