I hadn't heard of this book before it was suggested for my neighborhood book club. It was an excellent choice for that group - enough history to hold a story together, an interesting female protagonist, a little conversation about the Civil War, but nothing too challenging to the group's existing feelings.
I don't know enough about the real Varina (wife of Jefferson Davis) to know whether anything here is historically accurate, and this book didn't make me care enough to go check. What the book d ...more
