I loved the setting and the story-telling aspects of this book, and the way that was reflected in the fairy-tale side of the plot(view spoiler).

The story starts with a bang, with an accident on the river Thames which turns up two half-drowned people, a man and a small girl. The girl is the big mystery. Is she the daughter of the local landowners, who was kidnapped two years ago? Or i ...more

Magical realism books always get me in some way, shape or form. I find you either love them or hate them.

This is my second Diane Setterfield book. I read The 13th Tale and really enjoyed it. I did not enjoy Once Upon a River nearly as much.

Set along the Thames river, a girl goes missing and is found dead...but comes to life. So sets off a chain of events and stories that bring characters together in the area. Of loves lost and found. Stories told, remembered and changed.
