I wasn't sure whether I was going to like this book when I first started reading, but I'm really glad I pushed through that uncertainty, because The Fifth Season was mindblowingly good. It was obvious that the author put a lot of thought and effort into the worldbuilding and characterizations, and once I got the hang of the unfamiliar terminology, I found myself completely immersed.

“Fun” is not the right word for this book. Compelling is probably more appropriate. Refreshing in its cynicism. Somehow it manages to keep its momentum despite a fair amount of world-building. Some strong writing throughout, but also a fair amount of tiresome repetition (just too many identically structured scenes of a character’s pique/anger being extinguished by more exposition). Everything i detest about the fantasy genre is here. Glacial plotting, boring characterisation, meandering, dreary, tedious plot, cliche ideas (a magic school where people must be taught how to manage their skills against a feudal authority blah blah fucking blah The Witcher Earthsea Harry Potter Wheel of Time blah blah blah), bloated story stretched out over multiple volumes because fantasy writers can't write for shit, excruciating usage of made up words that sound like someone with a bad case
