The scientific explanation for vampires is interesting, but Robert Neville proved too problematic a main character for me to remotely enjoy in 2018. Probably some of this is intentional, but a lot of it is dated 1950s attitudes, so there's too much tough-guy hard drinking, while every encounter with a woman, vampire or otherwise, gets uncomfortably rapey. Wow I loved that ending! I don't think I've ever watched the whole movie but I could tell that it was totally different from the book. I also didn't think I'd like the book much but it was very engaging as it drew, extremely well, the atmosphere of isolation. What would happen if you're left all alone? The others around you only want to tear you apart so you must live alone and depend only on yourself. Yet still he dreams and he wishes...

What an amazing book. A beautiful story about loneliness and what it means to be human. Beautiful, dark and haunting. One of the best endings in modern literature... Ah, and don´t bother with the Will Smith film, it´s dull, unimaginative and neo-fascist.

I was originally apprehensive about reading something I had been told was a scary book. Also, the cover is unpleasant. I expected it to be more horror-y. I found it really interesting and engaging. There was tension and suspense, but no more so than other post apocalyptic / dystopia / epidemic stories (which this obviously influenced).
