This is a wonderful novel told in the first person by a 72-year old Beiruti woman. As I am the same age, I was with her from the first page.
First, you should know this about me: I have but one mirror in my home, a smudged one at that. Aaliyah is divorced, childless, and no longer even has a job, except for her re-translation of literary classics from English and French translations to Arabic, which she stockpiles in her box room. Byher own account she's no good to society. But she's still alive, still reading, still translating, and in spite of her best efforts to be a recluse, she does have an impact on other people's lives and vice versa.

I was a little scared going into this book that I might identify with Aaliyah too much

hmm... okay. so i am trying to figure out how i feel about this book, because it's a bit of a confusion of thoughts in my head right now. in theory, an introspective novel featuring an introverted literary translator and enough literary references to send a reader on quite a bookish project for a couple of years should be a book made specifically for me. and yet... things are niggling at me.
