Shelves: challenge-ultimate-popsugar-2017

I both listened to Mr. Alexie reading his book and read the e-book (I wanted to hear the inflection of his voice while seeing the illustrations drawn by Ellen Forney). I'm so glad I was able to have access to both editions as this really enhanced my appreciation for this book. There is very little praise I can add that hasn't been showered on this book already. This book is labeled young adult, but the content is more suited for an adult reader. It's written very casually from the point of view of Junior, a Spokane Indian who takes the advice of a teacher and ventures beyond "the Rez". There is a lot of tragedy in this...an eye opening tale of racism and poverty. ...more

I grew up not far from the Spokane Tribe rez, and truthfully this book just hit too close to home. While I'm glad this story was told, it was too painfully honest for me to find the humor in it. I knew people like Alexie's family, who struggled w poverty & alcoholism - it was all too relevant. ...more
