This was my first Carol Shields and it won't be my last, in spite of the fact that I would place this at the bottom of my 4-star reads (or even top of 3-star if I were feeling stingy). I thought the story/characters not especially enjoyable. The presentation was very interesting, however. Shields used a variety of ways to tell the story - different first person narratives, third person narratives, letters, and a mixture of newspaper articles. Some of what she wrote I read several times.

I remember loving the beginning - the story of Daisy's birth and her mother's death and how her dad takes care of her. So sad and magical in a very real way. ...more

Truthfully, I cannot like this novel that much. However, as I get closer & closer to the big four-oh, I can understand a little of the main character. Whilst this story is told from the protagonist’s birth to death, I felt that there wasn’t much on what she felt throughout her life or am I just confused? I think rather that she herself was confused for much of her life though she seems to just set that aside and went with the flow….
