A friend lent me a hard copy of this book saying, "It's a fun read, I think you'll like it! You could probably blow through it in an afternoon."
And I totally could have but no, I had to be cute about it. I read it on the train home after we parted. I put random moments at home towards it, as it's hard to fit a paper book in my work bag. A huge chunk of my reading time is on my commute so my progress suffered, and this 'afternoon read' took over a month to complete.

I'm between 3 and 4 stars on this one, but decided to give it the bump to 4.
This was a really fun, charming read. Guylain is interesting in a very ordinary way, if that makes any sense. He loves books and reading, but works at a pulping plant where he destroys unsold books. He has no friends except for the guard at the plant, the man who used to work the pulping machine, and his goldfish. He lies to his mother about his job because he's ashamed of it. He's just...kind of sad and ordinary. Excep ...more

Guylain Vignolles commutes into Paris from a suburb every day on the 6.27 am train. He always sits in the same seat, and he spends the journey reading aloud to the other passengers - not from one book, but from apparently random pages. Later we'll find out where he gets the pages, which is an eye-opener for any reader ... and he finds something on the train, which opens up a new avenue of interest for him.

Every once in a while a story like this comes along. Ordinary, everyday (no - extraordinary, wonderful) people who will stay with me for a long time. A simple-seeming, easy to read story that conjured magic in my heart as it drew me into its world and its people. I read this in one sitting although I didn't want it to end, but when it did, it left me with the warm and fuzzies and the very real problem of what to follow it up with!
