i finished this novel last night, and i am still unpacking it in my head, so if this review doesn't make much sense, apologies!!

i did very much like the atmosphere parry created in this book - it is dark and evocative, something i enjoy when reading historical fiction. i also like parry's style of writing. for a debut novel, she's done very well. where i am struggling a bit, though, is with the flow and the issues parry is tackling. i found the reading a bit bumpy, so never became fully engrosse ...more

This is a perfect example of why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Based on the bright, vibrant colors and the (very) little bit I knew about the story, I assumed this would be a fairly fluffy YA carnival novel. I went in with fairly low expectations, but expecting to find an enjoyable light read. I was so, so wrong!
